The short answer
ComfortFlow repairs furnaces, heat pumps, and wall heaters in Milpitas homes. We find the actual cause, explain your options before any work starts, and give you straight advice on whether to repair or replace. Bay Area Air District rules do not require replacing a working furnace.
Milpitas winters are mild but damp, and December and January nights get cold enough that a furnace or heat pump that won't run makes a house uncomfortable fast. ComfortFlow repairs gas furnaces, heat pumps, and wall heaters in homes across Milpitas (95035), about 10 miles from our San Jose base. Many heating systems here sit unused for much of the year, then run every evening once the rains start. That on-and-off pattern causes its own set of problems, and it's behind most of the heating repair calls we get.
Why Heating Systems Fail in Milpitas Homes
The Santa Clara Valley has dry summers and mild winters, so heating equipment often goes months without running. Dust settles on burners and flame sensors, and igniters and motors sit idle. Small problems stay hidden until the first cold week, when the system suddenly has to run every night. Damp winter air can also speed up corrosion on older parts and cause trouble with condensate drains on high-efficiency furnaces.
These are the symptoms Milpitas homeowners most often call us about:
- Furnace lights, then shuts off after a few seconds (often a dirty flame sensor or an airflow problem)
- Blower runs, but the air coming out stays cool
- Repeated clicking with no ignition
- Heat pump blowing lukewarm air, or the outdoor unit icing over
- Rumbling, squealing, or banging when the system starts
- A burning smell that lasts longer than the first few minutes of the season
- A thermostat that doesn't match the room temperature or keeps losing its settings
What Happens During a Repair Visit
The technician starts by asking what you've noticed and when it happens. Then they test the system step by step. That includes thermostat signals, power, the filter, the ignition sequence, the flame sensor, safety switches, the blower motor and capacitor, and the venting. On heat pumps we also check defrost controls and how the refrigerant side is performing.
Before any work begins, we explain what failed, why it failed, and what your options are. Nothing gets repaired until you approve it. If a part has to be ordered, we tell you up front. We also look for safety problems such as signs of a cracked heat exchanger, venting issues, or gas odors. If a system shouldn't be running, we'll tell you plainly.
Repair or Replace? How Bay Area Rules Factor In
Most heating problems can be repaired, and repair is usually the right first step for a system that's otherwise in decent shape. Bay Area Air District appliance rules do not require you to replace working equipment. They only apply when a furnace or water heater fails or is replaced.
It still helps to know what's coming. Under Air District Rule 9-4, natural gas furnaces manufactured from 2029 on must meet a zero-NOx emission standard. In practice, that points homeowners toward heat pumps when a furnace is replaced after that date. If your furnace is older and needs frequent repairs, it's worth thinking now about whether your next system will be a heat pump. It's also worth checking whether your electrical service can support one.
On incentives: the federal Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit (25C) only covered qualifying heat pumps placed in service before December 31, 2025. It isn't available for new installations. Milpitas homeowners can check BayREN and their local clean energy provider for current heat pump and electrification incentives. Those programs change with each funding cycle, so we confirm the current offer before we include it in any quote.
Quick Checks Before You Call
A few simple checks can sometimes solve the problem, or at least help us diagnose it faster:
- Make sure the thermostat is set to Heat, the setpoint is above room temperature, and the batteries aren't dead
- Look at the air filter and replace it if it's clogged
- Check the breaker and the power switch near the furnace
- Confirm the furnace's front panel is closed securely, since many units won't run with it loose
- Clear leaves and debris away from an outdoor heat pump unit
